Apple Crumble (50s into 25/1 on the show, and 100/1 in places this morning) sprang a surprise, but was certainly not without some market support, in the concluding Irish Stallion Farms EBF Mares (Pro/Am) Flat Race.

Jack Hendrick ’s mount quickened up well in the straight to win by five lengths from the 4/9 favourite Never Feel Blue who could only keep on at the one pace.

The winning daughter of Getaway is a half-sister to three winners and her dam is a half-sister to a couple of useful Aga Khan-bred performers.

She had made no impression in a couple of point-to-points last autumn.

Winning trainer Barry Fitzgerald said: "I got her off Robert Tector about three weeks ago. He rang me this morning and gave me a good hand on how to ride her. He said don’t cover her up too much.

“She was doing her work well at home and hopefully she will progress from this. She has a bright future.”
