Make A Track proved more proficient in the jumping stakes than most of his rivals as the former David Arbuthnot dual bumper scorer made a victorious hurdling debut for Gigginstown House Stud, his trainer Charlie Swan and jockey Davy Russell in the Punchestown Event Centre Maiden Hurdle.

The victorious chestnut son of Hernando 'missed' the second last but he was in front before the last. Gambled-on favourite Ceol Rua (4/1 this morning into 2/1) was slow at the last whilst Reizovic found himself with a lot to do at this stage after making at least one mistake.

Both Reizovic (very easy to back) and Ceol Rua came home well but they were three parts of a length and the same adrift of Make A Track at the line.

Swan said of the £85,000 purchase (at Doncaster in May) who is from the family of Make A Stand: "I'd say it wasn't too bad a maiden hurdle. He's a nice horse with a good cruising speed and he stays well.

"He's a horse that probably doesn't like to be in front too long.

"We'll go small steps with him and find a novice hurdle somewhere.

"Whether he'd like the ground that soft I'm not so sure." (EM)
