we’re delighted and it was a great ride by Phillip. The plan was to ride him forward and if they take him on, they take him on. At Punchestown the last day, he got tied up in the middle of a bunch of horses and wasn’t comfortable at any stage. It was borderline whether we were going to run him as I said if the ground was drying out, there was no point as he has had leg trouble. In the past, we thought he wanted loose soft ground but maybe we’re wrong. There was a fair bunch of staying chasers coming to the last: they were all there and I couldn’t believe that had the boot to pick up again after jumping the last. he’ll get an entry in the Irish National and could be a horse for it. His race the last day in Punchestown was 3m4f and maybe he doesn’t stay that in soft ground but in ground like today’s, might be happy over it. He wasn’t pulling up at the line anyway.

It was a good battle. I love a good battle when I win it, but I wouldn't like to be second in a battle like that!. We were a bit concerned about the ground as it's heavy and sticky. I thought he wouldn't handle that as well but he handled it well and he stays well. A furlong down I said 'this is going to be some battle'. The other horse was a half length in front at that stage but I knew this lad would stay. He's bred to stay. I'd like to put him over a bit further next time. He has to have soft ground as he hasn't great wheels under him. If the ground was soft at Punchestown there is a 3m6f race and he'd definitely go there. We're delighted with that. He's coming along, the handicapper wasn't easy on him early on.

It’s sticky and holding ground but he travelled well enough. He wasn’t foot perfect at a few fences over the far side but he lost no momentum and when he came around the bend he travelled well around to the last two which he jumped well. I’d say the other horse coming alongside helped him to wake up as he’s a bit lazy. He definitely will stay further and handles that ground. We’ll look for something similar again.
