The well-supported Tyrconnell provided Sarah Lynam with her second success, as he got the better of the 2/1 favourite My Good Brother in the concluding Follow @melbourne10racing On Instagram Handicap.
Fourth and fifth on his last two starts at Gowran and Tipperary respectively, the son of Bated Breath (also the sire of Bay Of Skaill was sent off a 13/2 chance today, having being available at 12/1 in early shows.
Settled towards rear on the outer by Danny Sheehy, the chestnut victor was ridden with two furlongs left to race and soon came with his challenge.
He got to the front well inside the final furlong, and kept up the gallop in the closing stages to score by half a length, in the colours of the trainer's father Eddie.
My Good Brother, who like the winner, jumped a stream of water just inside the final furlong, had to settle for second in the colours of Melbourne 10 Racing, while Pillar was another three and a half lengths clear of Pillar (13/2 to 4s) in third.
The winning trainer said: "That's my second winner so it's absolutely brilliant. He's been a little bit frustrating but I think he has a bit of ability and a bit of pace so hopefully he'll keep going forward from here.
"He was jumping puddles and it was a nail-biting finish. Danny gave him a good ride because things weren't going to plan, in the stalls and at the end, but it worked out well.
"It's very hard to get him into a race and I was surprised that he got in. It's tricky for horses like him and you have to take the races when you can.
"I thought it might be an easier field on the beach but I thought that was quite a competitive race.
"This place has such a great atmosphere, and I really wanted a winner on the beach, I've been saying it since the start of the year and I think dad thought I was mad getting so excited about Laytown.
"Hopefully there is a couple more wins in him, maybe he is a Dundalk horse after he liked the sand today.
"I love training, before I was looking after horses and giving out when the trainer didn't do what I thought he should do! Now I can't really complain.
"It's stressful but great fun when they win anyway.
"I was in Willie Mullins' for about two years, I was only supposed to go there on work experience but he couldn't get me to leave! I learned a lot there.
"Then I was in Australia with Gai Waterhouse. She is a genius and I think I learned a lot there too. I'm just trying to remember it all."
