Trainer Terry Casey dies Grand National-winning trainer Terry Casey has died after a long illness, it was announced today. He was 56.Casey, who enjoyed his finest moment when Rough Quest triumphed at Aintree in 1996, had been battling cancer for some time.Andrew Wates, Rough Quest`s owner, said: 'It is very sad. He died at 7pm last night at his partner`s in Somerset.'He had been ill for some time and had a number of operations and it finally caught up with him. He will be sadly missed.'Wates, whose son died in the year of Rough Quest`s National victory, has very fond memories of Casey.'We had some great moments together,' he said. 'He was a very good man in total. The year we won the National we had a great personal tragedy at home and was equally as good with that as he was with training the National winner.'He was a great, instinctive trainer. He got inside the mind of horses and that was what made him so successful from limited resources.'Rough Quest always had a lot of ability but he needed some knowing and Terry was able to unlock that ability so that he won the National and finished second in the Gold Cup.'
