Horse racing tips: Clonmel 3.12

We head to Clonmel for the nap of the day in the 3.12 Beginners Chase, where Willie Mullins looks to have a strong hand with Lombron and Rath Gaul Boy.

Lombron was fourth on his chase debut behind Cheltenham Festival winner Lecky Watson, before then jumping much better on his second chase start to finish second. That form puts him well in the mix, but with Paul Townend opting for the ride it is Rath Gaul Boy who should take all the beating.

He was highly tried as a bumper horse, finishing fifth in a Grade 2 at Aintree and sixth in the Grade 1 Champion NH flat race at Punchestown behind A Dream To Share. The eight-year-old gelding was rated 135 over hurdles but has always looked like a chaser in the making.

Rath Gaul Boy made a solid debut over fences, finishing third at Punchestown back in February, in a race where three of the six runners had already won a chase. He jumped well against much more experienced rivals, and looked to have needed the run after a break of 296 days.

Plenty of Mullins horses have improved bundles from their first run, and Townend clearly thinks Rath Gaul Boy can improve past Lombron, so he should be tough to beat.

The 4.15 Maiden Hurdle at Clonmel looks like a weak race with plenty of these not having shown much on the track, and Rockonliam can take the spoils.

He was well-fancied on his hurdles debut as he was backed into 6/4 joint favouritism but could only manage sixth, beaten 13 lengths. However, he had some excuses as he raced wide and was keen throughout on his first run since a point-to-point 311 days ago.

More importantly, Henry De Bromhead’s yard was going through a cold spell over Christmas and the early part of the new year, so that run can easily be forgiven.

There should be plenty more to come from five-year-old brother to Grade 2 hurdle winner Captain Cody, and he seems to have found a great opportunity.

Horse racing tips: Clonmel 2.42

Ballybrittas made a pleasing chase debut at Thurles last time out on drying ground where he travelled strongly and jumped well.

He was rated 109 over hurdles and had some solid point-to-point form, so chasing was always going to bring out some improvement.

This doesn't look like the strongest of Beginners Chases, and with Tiernan Power Roche claiming 5lb, he wouldn't need to improve much from his debut. The way he travelled that day suggests the drop in trip will be no problem, and he could easily be the one to beat.
