The Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket this afternoon has been dealt a big blow with the absence of The Lion In Winter due to a stone bruise.
The Sea The Stars colt was set to go off the odds-on favourite having made a winning debut at the Curragh in July and put up a classy performance the following month in the Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes at York.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained juvenile was prominent throughout in that seven-furlong event and was well on top at the finish to beat Wimbledon Hawkeye by a length and three-quarters.
He missed a proposed tilt at the Goffs Million last month due to a slight setback and Coolmore issued a message on X this morning stating “The Lion In Winter will not take his place in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes due to a stone bruise in his foot. Ryan Moore will now ride Expanded.”
The absence of the 10/11 favourite has obviously resulted in a major shakeup in the market with bet365 now betting:
10/11 Shadow Of Light 9/4 Ancient Truth 6/1 Seagulls Eleven 10/1 Expanded 50/1 Rock Of Cashel.
