Tawseef credits Bowe with a Flat success Irish racegoers may be most familiar with the sight of Tawseef racing over flights, but as a three time winner on the level cross-channel, and being by Monsun out of an Unfuwain mare, Colin Bowe's runner was always likely to make an impression racing on the Flat again. So it proved as the seven-year-old took the Ladies Day June 20th Apprentice Handicap at Gowran under Connor King. Tawseef was never far away and he hit the front inside the final furlong on his way to a half and length and one and three parts of a length victory over Colla Pier and Midfield General. Tawseef was a seven to one chance whilst Colla Pier and Midfield General were the market leaders, with the latter finishing out his race well for the bronze medal position. Brendan Walsh, assistant trainer to Colin Bowe, said: "It was expected. We gave him a run the last day, his form was over a mile and a quarter and we thought a mile and a quarter was still his trip. "He ran okay then. Connor got off him and said to step him up in trip. We did and we were very keen to keep Connor on him. "He will mix it now during the summer, between hurdles and the Flat, and I'd say his whole campaign will be geared towards Ballybrit. "The syndicate (First Not Last Syndicate) that own him are from Galway and we'll try to find something for him there over hurdles or on the Flat. "He was unlucky over hurdles, it took him a long time to lose his maiden tag and the lads were keen to go back to the Flat as he won three on the level when trained in England." The Stewards received a report from Mr W. Flemming, Turf Club Clerk of the Scales, regarding the fact that G.P.Brouder, rider of King Of Oriel, trained by Donal Kinsella, had requested to weigh out at 2 lbs overweight. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned in the presence of Aidan Wall, authorised representative for the trainer. Having considered the evidence, the Stewards allowed the overweight, but were satisfied that rider was in breach of Rule 198(vii)(a) and having considered his record, fined him 150 Euros. The Stewards also received a report that the rider had attempted to weigh out for this race without wearing a body protector. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who accepted that this was the case. Having considered the evidence, the stewards were of the opinion that the rider was in breach of Rule 198(v) and having considered his record, suspended him for seven race days. S.B. Kelly, rider of Fantastic Dilly trained by M. Keane, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount hung badly left handed. (DM & EM)
