Jockey Laffit Pincay Jr., who broke Bill Shoemaker's all-time record of 8,333 wins on December 10th, has been selected to receive a Special Eclipse Award for 1999.
Pincay's honour was announced on Monday by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the National Turf Writers Association, and the Daily Racing Form, the three groups that vote for Eclipse Awards.
The Special Award is not given annually, and was last presented in 1995 to jockey Russell Baze. Other jockeys to be so-honoured have been Shoemaker (1976) and Eddie Arcaro and Johnny Longden (both in 1994).
Pincay will receive his award on the evening of January 17th, when Horse of the Year and other champions are named during the Eclipse Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, California.
