Springt De La Mare clung on by an ever-diminishing head to make a winning racecourse debut in Navan's bumper.
The former point-to-point winner moved to Gavin Cromwell for his racecourse career and was given the office by Declan Lavery to go and win his race inside the final furlong.
He went for home, however, My Trump Card who was toiling in fourth after hitting a flat spot, really found his second wind and charged home. The line came in time for Springt De La Mare, though, who held on at 5/2 from the 7/4 favourite. Apples's Of Bresil was just a further head back in third.
Assistant Garvan Donnelly said: “He's a decent horse and he'll come on a lot for it as he was underdone.
“He's been doing everything right, he's a chaser in the making and you can see the size of him.
“It was a very good ride by Deccy in a tactical race, I'd say they are three good horses.
“He's a really special horse, I'd say, and hopefully he goes on to bigger things.”
This brought up an across-the-card for Cromwell who took the amateur jockeys' handicap chase in Cheltenham with Hascoeur Clermont ridden by Noel McParlan.
The Raceday Stewards interviewed Mr F. Maguire, rider of Apple's Of Bresil concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned. Mr. F. Maguire accepted he was in breach of the regulation and apologised for his actions. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Raceday Stewards found Mr. F. Maguire in breach of R.10.3(g)(frequency) and in considering his record in this regard they suspended him for three race days.
