A 24-runner apprentice handicap over a mile at the Curragh would always be a head-scratcher, but those who identified Shukhov can feel very pleased with themselves as he demolished his rivals in style.
The five-year-old gelding didn’t go unbacked from 14s this morning down to 17/2 on the off.
Donagh O’Connor was on board for Johnny Levins and once he gave his charge the office a furlong and a half out the response was electric. Shukhov powered right away from the toiling opposition and hit the winning line six lengths to the good over Rightway (12/1). Stronger Than Me (8/1) and Spirited (20/1) completed the placings in third and fourth respectively.
Winning handler Johnny Levins said: “I’d say they went very quick in front and the Curragh mile takes some getting. He’s really sprinted clear and I’m only starting to work him out. I’ve 17 horses at the moment and have just got five yearlings.
“That’s Donagh’s second winner as he rode Miller Beach to win at Naas. He’s apprenticed to me and is going to be a top-class jockey.”
