Dermot Weld brought up his third winner of this year's Galway Festival when Colin Keane kept it simple on Sherkin Island in the extended mile maiden.
The 8/13 favourite was pushed along from stall two to take over from early leader Kojin
Sherkin Island had Kojin off the bridle, and ridden, entering the home straight and had him beaten off with 100 yards to race.
The winner scored by two and a half lengths from the 7/2 runner-up. Champion Green on his first start since November, made good late headway to be third at 3/1.
Weld said: “She did it nicely. She ran a lovely race at the Curragh first time out and she's progressed nicely, but she's still a very immature filly and we won't see the best of her until next year.
“We'll hasten slowly and see how she progresses. She's a filly I'll look forward to next year over 10 furlongs. Please God there will be plenty more days to come with her.”
She was placed in a Curragh maiden in May and the form of that contest is working out well.
Sherkin Island lies southwest of Co Cork.
