Glenquin Castle made it an incredible seventh successive win in handicap company when gaining a fortunate victory in the Hanlon Concrete Handicap Chase at Punchestown.
His previous six wins were evenly split between hurdles and fences but the sequence looked in some doubt as the front-running John Adams still held a length advantage at the final fence of this extended 3m1f event.
However, that rival blundered and unseated Eoin Walsh leaving the way for Glenquin Castle, who also made a slight mistake, to justify 11/8 favouritism by a length and a half in the hands of regular partner Mark Walsh. Exit To The West took the runner-up spot with Beating The Odds and Hoke Colburn completing the minor places.
Winning trainer Martin Brassil said, “He’s an amazing horse and just when you think he’s beaten he gets a bit of luck as well.
“He’s consistent and it’s great to have a horse like him. The kids would ride him out and he’d never show you a whole pile.
“He’d probably prefer good ground but he got away with that today.
“We’ll probably find something for him around Christmas and he’s still a novice so he could go for a novice handicap.”
