Natalia Lupini's Saint Brandon (5/1) showed good resolution to take the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Race over seven furlongs in Gowran Park.

He was always in the front rank for Wayne Lordan, but faced a stiff challenge inside the final furlong from 10/11 favourite Mathan.

Saint Brandon really dug deep in the closing stages, though, and went on by three parts of a length at the line.

Lordan said: “He did it nicely. He jumped and I was able to get to the front and dictate it. He was a little bit on the bridle with me.

“He found plenty under pressure. He had a penalty from the last day as well so it was a good performance.

“I was headed between the two and the one and then I got going again.

“The ground is slow but he finished second on soft ground at Galway as a two-year-old. I don’t think ground is an issue to him, fast or slow.

“I think that’s a good trip for him.”

Saint Brandon followed up on a victory in Cork 10 days ago.
