Davy Russell is now just five behind the sidelined Paul Townend (76-71) in the ongoing battle for the jump jockey's championship after again teaming up with trainer Charles Byrnes to take the Ryan's Cleaning Specialist Beginners Chase aboard Campbonnais
Russell and Byrnes had earlier combined to land the Grade 2 Mares Hurdle with Knockfierna and Campbonnais justified good support as the 6/4 favourite.
The Gigginstown-owned gelding and Kid Curry (5/1) set down for a great tussle in the straight, with the former just getting on top on the run-in to score by a length and a quarter. Kingsmoss (20/1) was a further seven lengths back in third.
Charles Byrnes said: “That was a great ride by Davy. We'll probably go handicapping with him, mixing it between fences and hurdles. I've no great plans but he is game and genuine, and suited by two and a half to three miles.”
