Roisin springs surprise in the bumper Roisin Dubh sprang a 16/1 surprise in the bumper at Kilbeggan this evening, the Tyrrellspass Flat Race, under Derek O’Connor for her trainer Philip Byrne. The 6yo daughter of Winged Love was having her sixth career start this evening and she tracked the leaders in third for much of the contest before making headway to leading approaching the straight. She was ridden and kept on well in the straight to score by a length and three parts. The Andy Oliver trained Jabus ran well to finish second also at 16/1 under James Carroll while Our Lady Carmel finished well to take third a further length back in third under Declan Lavery for Prunella Dobbs. The 11/8 favourite Pollywollydoodle could only manage fifth for Eoin Griffin and Mikey Fogarty. Winning trainer Philip Byrne, who was recording his second winner under National Hunt rules, said afterwards: "Derek gave her a super ride. She is a progressive horse and would have had her day before now only for soft ground. She got her good ground today. "She will be a fun mare over hurdles and I’m looking forward to that. "I’m delighted for her owner Clare McNamara who is a neighbour of mine in Shinrone (Co Offaly)." The winner was reverting back to bumper company today having finished a well beaten tenth in a maiden hurdle at Roscommon on Tuesday. (On-course reporting by Gary Carson)
