Rockbury Lad recorded a third career win when typically coming from off the pace to land the Mac Tar Ltd. Apprentice Handicap at Bellewstown.

The Michael O’Callaghan-trained gelding loves coming past horses and made smooth headway to challenge between rivals a furlong out.

Sam Coen waited until the final 150 yards before asking for an effort and the 5/1 joint favourite held off the late surge of Takeachancejimmy by a neck. Pandion Power was two and a quarter lengths back in third.

Coen said, “We took our time and it has worked out well in the end. Michael just told me not to get there too soon and thankfully it worked out.

"He's a great servant and has been running through the winter, and it has paid off in the end.

"I just took my time and waited for gaps to open, and he took them when they came. He has done it well in the end.

"He did idle a bit when he got to the front, but he picked up again."
