The M.D. O'Shea & Sons Handicap Hurdle produced a good finish with 9/2 joint-favourite Prince Zaltar landing the spoils in the hands of Paddy O’Hanlon.

Having got in as second reserve, the Philip Rothwell-trained gelding was given a patient ride and had only a few rivals behind heading out on the final circuit.

From early in the straight, the six-year-old began to work his way into contention and narrowly headed Optional Mix on the run to the final flight. Despite the latter rallying gamely, Prince Zaltar found enough to fend off her challenge by a neck.

The six-year-old, successful at Navan in March, was making it two wins and two seconds from his last five starts.

Phidelma Elvin, representing Philip Rothwell said, “Delighted to get that first win of the season and huge thanks to the owners (the Blind Squirrels Syndicate).

“He’s a lovely horse and Paddy was just unbelievable on him. Brilliant ride and got him there just on the line, it was fantastic to watch.”
