Pat Mangan had the perfect birthday present when Shazand got up late to land the handicap chase at Punchestown.
The 19-year-old produced the gelding at the last and he stayed on gamely to prevail by the narrowest of margins from Arkendale
"I call him 'Monty' as in Montys Pass. He's only been a professional for five days and to get a winner is great. I'm delighted for him," said trainer Edward O'Grady.
"This horse won first time out last year when he was unfancied. He had a bad fall on his second start and never seemed to recover his confidence.
"Monty rode him schooling last week and I thought he went well for him. We're very pleased."
