PIRATE SAILS HOME WITH THE GOLD

Proud trainer David Nicholls hugged his son Adrian after the pair had combined to secure victory in the Ladbroke (Ayr) Gold Cup today.

Bahamian Pirate, one of eight runners from the Nicholls stable, was produced with perfect timing to clinch the £100,000 handicap.

Nicholls, 19, sent the 33-1 chance clear in the final 100 yards to defeat Lago di Varano (50-1) by one and a quarter lengths.

It was a further half length back to Guinea Hunter (25-1) with the heavily-backed 8-1 favourite Gaelic Storm fourth.

'It`s difficult to speak after seeing Adrian win,' said Nicholls. 'He`s lost his claim by winning this and what a great way to do it.

'I was never able to win this race as a jockey myself as I wasn`t good enough.

'Adrian has worked hard and must work harder but I`m just pleased that I can put him on some nice horses.

'My first wife left him at a young age and he`s followed me around everywhere. I even remember when he wandered into the weighing room. It was against the rules and they fined me £500 I think.'

Bahamian Pirate was assisted by the fast pace set by his stablemate Further Outlook, who raced alone on the far side.

The leader`s stride shortened before the final furlong and it was clear at that point that Bahamian Pirate was going to win.

He came through powerfully and pulled away to score with something to spare.

Nicholls junior said: 'I thought the ground might have been against him but I`ve never been travelling better on a sprinter with two furlongs to go.'

Nicholls senior, who last month won the Stewards` Cup with Tayseer, was once again underlining his skills with sprinters though this was his first success in the Ayr Gold Cup.

Bahamian Pirate came to him from Ireland - he was trained by Con Collins - where he had been raced over one and a half miles.

'He was sent to me by his owners Edward St George and Lenny Dorji from Calcutta who I used to ride for,' said Nicholls.

'Unfortunately I told Lenny not to back him. He has throat cancer but he will have been shouting and screaming this one home.

'Adrian had the choice between Pirate and Royal Result and he`s done well to get it right.

'Further Outlook made his life a little easier. Bahamian Pirate is a bit lazy and tends to stop when getting there. Frankie Dettori even said it might be better to fit him with a pair of blinkers.'

Royal Result was the next home of Nicholls` runners, coming in fifth.

But Pepperdine, one of the front runners in the ante-post betting, finished last while Tayseer finished seventh.

Fifteen-horse trainer Michael Mullineaux celebrated his biggest success as Lady Boxer got up near the line to capture the Ladbroke (Ayr) Silver Cup.

The 33-1 chance produced a powerful late surge under Allan Mackay to catch Nineacres, also 33-1, and prevail by a head.

The well-backed 12-1 chance Get Stuck In, clear atthe halfway stage on the stands` rail, was one-length back in third.

'I didn`t even see the race. I had to go down to the start as the main thing is to keep her as calm as you can,' said Mullineaux who had one winner as a jockey.

'She did come from a long way back but she has to be ridden like that.'

Lady Boxer had been declared overnight for a contest on the Ayr card on Friday only to be withdrawn from that race.

'We declared her for the other race because we weren`t sure she would get in the Silver Cup,' said Mullineaux.

'But once we knew yesterday morning that she was going to get in we decided to keep her for this race.

'She won over seven furlongs last time but I always thought she would be just as good at a stiff six furlongs.'

The filly, fourth in the corresponding contest last year, has provided three of Mullineaux`s four wins in two seasons.

Newmarket-based Geoff Wragg likes nothing better than visiting Ayr and he was rewarded when the consistent Island House, ridden by Michael Roberts, landed the Doonside Cup.

After a keen tussle through the final two furlongs, the colt edged out the favourite Forbearing, who carried 1lb overweight, by half a length in the Listed race.

'He`s a 10lb better horse on soft ground but at Windsor last time the leaders just slipped him when they went round the bend,' said Wragg.

'He`s a lovely horse and will be staying in training next season. He might run again abroad before the end of this season.'

Roberts teed up a double when Harrier made all in the Land Engineering EBF Stakes. Tim Easterby`s charge was half a length too good for Zulfaa.

There was compensation for Zulfaa`s trainer John Dunlop and owner Hamdan Al Maktoum when the superbly-bred Alshadiyah secured the Faucets First For Faucets Firth of Clyde Stakes.
