Twelve year old Prosperity Square rolled back the years with a fifth career win at Wexford today, landing the Rosslare Handicap Chase and supplying trainer Conor O’Dwyer with his third winner in a month.
Ridden by capable 7lbs claimer Ricky Doyle, the son of Anshan was well clear entering the home straight and in the end maintained his gallop for a 16 lengths win and, surprisingly given his age, his first success on soft ground.
Prosperity Square’s win was bridging a two and a half year gap between wins and, having last won at Punchestown in October 2014, O’Dwyer later revealed “it just shows you when things are going well they are going well! I honestly wasn't going to run the horse because he has never handled soft ground in his life but there was nothing coming up for him really so I just said I'd take a chance.
“The horses are just flying at the minute and when they are, I suppose it's stupid not to run them!
"It's great for the auld horse. We were half talking about retiring him this year but we'll see later on; when he’s in that sort of form we'll keep him going. He could go to Limerick now or come back here and there’s 0-95 at Roscommon if Noel O'Brien (handicapper) was kind to me! It's nice to see him go on that sort of ground as well - if it happens again I'll know we can kick on with him."
