Norman Williamson retires.

Top jump jockey Norman Williamson has announced his retirement from race riding.

Williamson, who rode a career total of 1,268 winners, took the decision on medical grounds after suffering two heavy falls in recent weeks.

The Co. Cork born jockey completed a famous double at the Cheltenham Festival in 1995 where he landed both the Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle on horses trained by Kim Bailey.

Among the long list of his other big race winners were Ned Kelly (Irish Champion Hurdle), Commanche Court (Triumph Hurdle) while he also rode horses like Teeton Mill and Ned Kelly´s brother Nick Dundee.

Williamson, 34, reported 'I´ve recently bought a farm in Co. Meath and more immediately I´d like to continue with some television work.'
