Backtonormal powered clear on the run-in to record a cosy success in the O’Driscolls Leopardstown Handicap Chase for in-form trainer Gavin Cromwell.

Conor Stone-Walsh produced the 11/4 favourite to challenge going to the final fence and the Milan gelding hit the front soon after landing over that fence.

He soon asserted and the winning rider could afford to stand up close home as he recorded a three-and-a-quarter length win over Sequestered in the 150,000 euro contest.

It was the winner’s fourth outing over fences and his first in handicap company.

Cromwell said:- “The step up in trip and niceish ground suited and Conor was very good on him. He’s a good rider.

“His work lately has been good. We thought he’d run a big race, and he duly did.

“I wouldn’t rule out going for the two-and-a-half-mile novice handicap at Cheltenham.”

It was a third win this weekend for Cromwell.
