Godolphin`s Noverre claimed thehorsesmouth.co.uk Champagne Stakes at Doncaster this afternoon to become became the first French-trained winner of the Group Two event.

Frankie Dettori produced Noverre to lead inside the final furlong and land the seven furlong contest by 1 1/2L from CD Europe.

Ghayth and Chianti dead-heated for third place a head away.

Diana Cooper, racing manager to Godolphin France, said: `That is a very nice winner for us. He has progressed all season.

Pat Eddery was seen at his most determined as he brought the John Dunlop-trained Romantic Affair with a sustained run to win a thrilling Rothmans Royals Mallard Stakes (Showcase Handicap).

Romantic Affair had only three behind him turning for home but Eddery threaded his way through the fieldto get into contention and in a stirring battle to the line the partnership got the better of Afterjacko by a head.

Dunlop`s travelling head lad Robert Hamilton said: 'He may have been a unlucky loser at York, but he went up 7lb for being second so in effect he was like a winner with a penalty.

'He had to get the run today and he has only just won so he was no good thing.'

Romantic affair is in the #70,000 Coral Eurobet Stakes at Ascot on September 24th and has 8st 5lb plus a 4lb penalty for today`s success.

David Elsworth said of Afterjacko: 'Everything was right except the result, he is rated about 90 so we will keep him to this level and he will improve.

'He has been schooled and jumps very well and will go hurdling one day.'

Blue Reigns, who missed the cut by one for the #200,000 St Leger Yearling Stakes here yesterday, had some consolation when taking the DBS St Leger Yearling Stakes at Doncaster today.

It looked as if Fair Princess might lose her maiden tag when she struck the front a furlong and a half out but Frankie Dettori brought Blue Reigns with a strong run to collar her well inside the final furlong to score by a neck.

Winning trainer Nick Littmoden however admitted: 'He is a bit special, but we have only been able to gallop him in the last 10 days because he had sceptic bronchitis.

'So in many ways I am glad we got in the `B` race rather than the main one because his preparation had not been ideal, several of my other two-year-olds have had the same problem.'
