Ballycasey gained a first Grade 1 success at Leopardstown when completing a top level double on the day for trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Ruby Walsh, in the Dr. P.J. Moriarty Novice Chase.
The winner, who was bouncing back from a minor layoff, made virtually all in the three-runner race but was pressed by Don Cossack entering the home straight.
Ballycasey quickened well though and had the measure of Don Cossack when that rival jumped left at the final obstacle causing interference to the closing Carlingford Lough which as a result blundered Tony McCoy out of the saddle.
Ballycasey eventually coming home the four lengths winner.
Afterwards Mullins, earlier successful with Vautour in the Grade 1 Deloitte Novice Hurdle, stated “he (Ballycasey) worked at Punchestown last week and Paul (Townend, rider) said he worked really well and was right.
“He had little problems after his last run and we put him away but when Champagne Fever couldn't today, we let Ballycasey take his chance and he's not a bad first reserve!
“Don Cossack was playing the fitness card and when he came to Ballycasey, I thought we were beaten and I was surprised he pulled out. It was promising considering he was held up and hopefully will improve and being by Presenting, he should be better on better ground.
“I imagine he'll go for the RSA Chase unless Patrick twists my arm for the four miler but I doubt it!”
Boylesports and Paddy Power both cut Ballycasey to 5/1 favourite (from 8/1) for the RSA Chase.
