Montys Meadow made a winning debut over flights in the opener at Cork this afternoon, the Charleville Cheese Maiden Hurdle, scoring under Paddy Mangan for his father Jimmy.
The six-year-old son of Oscar won the bumper on this card twelve months ago and he finished second on his three starts since.
Sent off a 10/3 chance today he hit the front after the fourth last and despite jumping badly left in the straight he kept on well when ridden on the run-in, going on to win by three and a quarter lengths. New World ran well to finish second at 25/1 under Andrew Lynch for Keith Clarke while Hurry Henry was another length and a half back in third under Brian Hayes for Henry De Bromhead at 33/1. Patsio went off the well-backed 11/4 favourite (7/1 this morning and from 4/1 on-course) but he could only manage fourth, a further eight and a half lengths back under Paul Townend for Philip Fenton.
Jimmy Mangan said afterwards: "He never jumped like that before. I'd say it was due to greenness as he was in front too soon. When he goes up in grade that won’t be a problem and he will be alright.
"He handles that heavy ground well. I bred him myself and I have the mare. The owners (Hanford’s Chemist Limited) are from Wales and we will probably find a race for him at Limerick over Christmas."
