Review TRAMORE 13TH AUG

Jockey Davy Russell recorded a double at Tramore today, combining with trainers Tony Mullins and Pat Doyle for his 23/1 brace.

Mullins' The Last Stand provided Russell with his first winner in the Beaver Distributor 3YO Hurdle, the second juvenile event of its kind this year.

The winner chased the leaders before Russell produced the son of Vettori to lead on the inner before the last, eventually staying on well to defeat Saalback.

Mullins was absent, having travelled to Bangor to saddle Calorando, but his assistant Peter Daly did report 'The Last Stand had been running well on the Flat and he may now go for a winners' hurdle at either Tralee or Listowel.'

An hour later, Russell was again seen to good effect on Stitch Pockets for Pat Doyle.

Doyle later reported 'she loves that hard ground and was a bit unlucky at Wexford last time when the ground turned very soft after heavy rain. She is well handicapped over fences and will probably go chasing now.'

Ted Walsh's Capt Pugwash landed the beginners' chase under locally born jockey Gary Hutchinson.

Capt Pugwash was only a moderate third at the second last fence but the son of Karinga Bay responded to Hutchinson's urgings to stay on strongly from the last to beat Call Me Judy by two and a half lengths.

According to Walsh, Capt Pugwash 'didn't handle the heavy ground during the winter and will make a lovely summer chaser. We'll have a bit more fun with him before the ground changes.'

Leading apprentice Chris Hayes made it winner number 28 of the season when riding Pat Martin's Goose Island to win the betfair.com Handicap while Joe Crowley's Kippane landed the Guillamene Handicap under Wayne Lordan

20/1 outsider Flying Jody made use of some good point to point form to win the maiden hurdle on her 'park' debut for JD Moore.
