Review GALWAY 6TH SEP

Trainer John Oxx recorded a 54/1 double at Galway today, combining with jockeys Niall McCullagh and Jamie Moriarty for both wins.

Oxx's second win was with Caprarola, in the most valuable event, the E21,000 Donnelly's Of Barna Race.

Ridden by 5lb apprentice Jamie Moriarty, the daughter of Rahy raced in mid division but needed strong driving to get to the front early in the straight, eventually staying on well for a three length win over Poetical.

Oxx was absent but his representative Slim O'Neill later mentioned 'Caprarola is a tricky filly and Jamie, who rides her out at home, gave her a very good ride.'

He added 'she acts the maggot a bit can be a bit of a madam but has plenty of ability and doesn't take much work at home.'

Half an hour earlier, Oxx's Rose Of Killeen was the 10/1 winner of the Great Southern Hotels Galway Handicap under Niall McCullagh.

O'Neill later reported 'she enjoyed the good ground and deserved the win as she had been running consistently well.'

There was an interesting aside to jockey James Sullivan's first career winner, after the 18 year old 'super sub' from Westmeath partnered Christy Roche's Charyan to win the opening Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Maiden.

Charyan was due to be ridden by Keith Schous, but having not gained sufficient experience under the race conditions, was ineligible to ride the filly.

Having received the phone call from the Turf Club, Roche booked Schous' roommate (and employee of trainer James Burns) Sullivan for the ride, with the pair running out an all out short head winner from Striking Force

Trainer Dermot Weld, as expected, landed the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden but not with 4/9 favourite Duke Of Milan, who could only finish fifth behind stablemate and 20/1 newcomer Tenacious Greg.

Tenacious Greg, under Pat Shanahan, made good progress to lead inside the final furlong, eventually recording a half length win over Shelin.

Afterwards, Weld remarked 'that was a surprise as I thought the race might come a bit too soon for Tenacious Greg. He is a big immature horse but we'll now go for the Listed Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown later this season.'

Eleven year old gelding Penny Rich provided trainer Tom Hogan with his fifth win since returning to his Co Tipperary yard last year, when winning the Loughnane Meat Products Handicap.

Ridden by Davy Condon, the winner raced in rear before progressing through the field, eventually getting to the front in the straight, for an all out head win over Trouville.

Afterwards a delighted Hogan mentioned 'Davy gave him a super ride. Penny Rich is still a good horse despite his age. Hopefully he will be as good as a 12yo and it is a possibility he may go back hurdling.'

Jockey Ruby Walsh knows more than most where the winning post is, and he produced Willie Mullins' Roundstone Lady with perfect timing to win the 3m handicap hurdle.
