Review CORK 3RD JUN On the back of a highly promising debut effort at Dundalk, the Dermot Weld-trained Jassas had little difficulty in winning the European Breeders Fund Maiden at Cork yesterday. Weld is making quite a habit of mopping up Cork's highly valuable yet poorly supported conditions races and as if to prove the point, his Jassas was never headed in winning the three runner affair. The Ballydoyle newcomer Twentytwoandchange, although sent off the 1 to 2 favourite, never got in a blow in finishing second to the three and a half length winner. Representing his father, Mark Weld said, 'It was going to take a good one to beat him today. He will now go for the Goffs Challenge and hopefully he will be a live contender.' Galway is not surprisingly on the agenda for Francis Bay who battled well to win the F.B.D Investment Services Handicap at generous odds of 6 to 1. Completing a double for Weld and his stable jockey Pat Smullen, Francis Bay is to be given a three week holiday before returning for the Galway Plate. Like Jassas, another to go chasing rich pickings is Crystal Springs, the facile winner of the F.B.D Life and Pensions Handicap Hurdle. A trip to Royal Ascot for the two miles and four furlongs Ascot Stakes is on the cards for Pat Martin's filly. Tony Martin won the same race with Barba Papa last year. Martin said,'That is her third time to win here and she just keeps surprising us. She will be entered for the two miles and six furlongs handicap hurdle at Navan next Sunday but Ascot is the aim'. Noel Glynn sent out Gotarapofahames to claim the valuable F.B.D. Handicap under Tom Queally. Leading inside the final furlong, the 10 to 1 chance proved too strong for the recent Leopardstown winner Don't Surrender. Disqualified when losing a weight cloth at Clonmel and a faller at Tipperary in the space of four days last month, Nippy Cherry put his run of bad luck behind him when making all the running under John Cullen in the F.B.D Insurance Handicap Chase. Although jumping to his left throughout, Nippy Cherry saw off the late challenge of Diamond Melody to win by a length and a half. Risk Material, a smart performer on the flat when with Aidan O'Brien, finished fifth to the well supported Hurry Bob on his jumping debut in the F.B.D Brokers Maiden Hurdle. Third into the straight, Risk Material was soon under pressure and weakened from the second last flight. Hurry Bob gave Paddy Mullins his first success since Native Endurance scored at the course in early January.
