The J.P. McManus owned Boherbuoy caused a 12/1 upset when winning on hurdles debut at Sligo today, scoring on his first start for current trainer Niall Madden in the Taylor Construction Civil Works Maiden Hurdle.
Ridden by Mark Enright, the ex-David Wachman trained gelding arrived into strong contention on the outer entering the home straight and in the end stayed on nicely to beat 9/4f Canny Tom by four and a quarter lengths.
Madden, who sold the half-hour earlier beaten even-money favourite Tay Lane following her win at Tipperary on May 25, later commented “it was great to be asked to train the horse (Boherbuoy) and he’s a nice horse. He had a good flat rating and it all depended on whether he was going to produce it over hurdles. He could be a nice horse and he should win more races and could go back on the flat too.”
