Dermot McLoughlin is hopeful of getting Lord Lariat back to Fairyhouse for another shot at the Irish Grand National on Easter Monday.

The ten-year-old won the prestigious prize back in April 2022 but has only had five runs since his big day.

He finished fourth on his return from a 23-month absence, over timber at Fairyhouse, early last month but disappointed in another handicap hurdle back at the venue 17 days later.

Connections will now target the Bluegrass Stamm 30 Chase at Down Royal on St Patrick’s Day with the Golden Lariat gelding.

“I’d say we ran him too soon after Fairyhouse the first day,” said McLoughlin.

“Unfortunately he got tired going to the last and Paddy (O’Hanlon) did the right thing by pulling him up.

“We’ll go on Paddy’s Day to the north for the chase there and that qualifies him then to run in the Irish National again. Hopefully that’s the way we’re going to go.”
