Millenary showed courage in abundance to claim victory in the Rothmans Royals St Leger at Doncaster today.
Richard Quinn settled the John Dunlop-trained colt, backed down to 11-4 favourite at the off, in mid-division as Rostropovich set the early pace.
Pat Eddery rushed Dalampour to the front after a few furlongs and still held the lead early in the straight as Millenary loomed up in his slipstream.
Hitting the front two furlongs out, the winner saw off Chimes At Midnight, who had been supplemented at a cost of £20,000 last week.
But he then had to fight off the challenge of Air Marshall (3-1), who he had displaced as favourite, in the final furlong.
Millenary did not shirk the issue and ran on to score by three-quarters of a length and give Dunlop his third Leger victory following Moon Madness (1986) and Silver Patriarch (1997).
Chimes At Midnight (40-1) took third place.
Quinn, riding his second Leger winner following Snurge in 1990, said: 'I ended up in front a bit too soon, he`s idled and when I`ve picked him up he`s ran on again.
'When you`re out in front you`re always waiting for the winning post to come.' Dunlop added: 'He`d done nothing wrong this season except one bad run in France on soft ground.
'We gave him some time off and after he won at Goodwood we decided not to run him after that and aim him at the St Leger.'
