Trainer Ger Lyons' yard is in rude health at present and his latest juvenile winner was with newcomer Yaxeni in the concluding Marymount Hospice Irish EBF Fillies Maiden at Cork today.
Fresh from Siskin's Group 1 Phoenix Stakes win on August 9, trainer Lyons has added five wins in the intervening eight days, including a Listed winner with Justifier and today sent out Yaxeni to make a winning debut.
Ridden by Colin Keane, the daughter of Maxios battled gamely for a half-length win over Unknown Pleasures and afterwards assistant trainer Shane Lyons reported “she has a brilliant attitude and she is such a lady at home I was hoping the race would wake her up. Before the race she was sleepy and went down to the start as if she was just having a day out.
“She is in the same bracket as Leminsta (finished fourth at Leopardstown on Thursday) and we decided to come here over a mile with her and she will be a lovely filly over a trip next year.
“She has a bit of class and there were a lot of talking horses in that race today. We've just delighted as she was just ready to start and she was well bought for 8,000gns as a foal.”
