Kempes put down after John Durkan fall

This year's Hennessy Gold Cup winner Kempes was put down yesterday after he shattered his knee when falling in the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown.

The Willie Mullins trained gelding was sent off at 10/1 for yesterday's Grade 1 contest but made a bad mistake at the first before suffering his fatal injury five fences from home under David Casey.

The 8yo son of Intikhab won eleven times in his career including an Ulster Derby on the level when trained by Frances Crowley and two Grade 1's over fences including this year's Hennessy at Leopardstown in February.
