Keane brings up Roscommon brace on well-backed Liars Colin Keane doubled up in the finale, the Roscommon Racecourse Handicap, on John McConnell’s Liars Corner. Backed from 4/1 into 9/4 favourite, this fellow went a place better after finishing runner-up to Maunganui at Down Royal on Saturday. Liars Corner chased the leaders through this mile and a half event. He made headway to lead entering the straight, and he was asked for more from two furlongs out. Clear a furlong out, the successful son of Zoffany stayed on strongly inside the final furlong. He was eased close home to comfortably see off Firlinfeu by three and a quarter lengths. Keane won earlier on Mean Fomhair for his father Gerry. “He showed no ill effect from Down Royal and he’s a strong stayer on this ground. I’m delighted as he lost his way a little bit last year after he won in Hamilton but he’s been much more consistent this year," said McConnell. “He might have bought himself another year as he was on the shortlist to go. He’s been placed over hurdles as well so there is probably a future there for him. I’m having a good few days (third winner in the space of 72 hours).” C.D. Hayes, rider of Franklyn trained by Aidan Anthony Howard, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount ran keen during this race. (AM & EM)
