Emmet Mullins is planning to send his Paddy Power Irish Cesarewitch winner Cape Gentleman over hurdles in the coming weeks.

The Champs Elysees gelding, a winner in France for Nicolas Clement, was having just his second start for the young Bagenalstown trainer when scoring impressively under Ronan Whelan in the valuable staying handicap at the Curragh just over a week ago.

Mullins had been considering another big prize on the level with the 4-year-old, who was subsequently raised 11lb to a mark of 96, but may now look at a novice hurdling campaign instead.

“He had a lot of overreaches after the race (Irish Cesarewitch) and has only just started riding back. It was all superficial, just cuts and nicks, and he’s none the worse.

“I’d imagine he will go hurdling, especially now that we have missed a week so it would be hard to go for the November Handicap (at Naas next month). If we had a clear run that would have been an option.

“He’ll still have those options next year.

“He schooled well before the Covid shutdown. He hasn’t schooled since but I don’t see it being a problem.”
