Gossamer back to best at the Curragh

Gossamer returned to form with avengance when recording a runaway victory under Jamie Spencer in the Entenmann`s Irish 1,000 Guineas.

The Luca Cumani-trained filly, who never looked like justifying favouritism after a slow start in the Newmarket equivalent, was always close to the pace on this occasion.

The daughter of Sadler`s Wells travelled strongly to lead a furlong out, and soon quickened clear to beat Quarter Moon by four-and-a-half-lengths.

Aidan O'Brien, fresh from saddling a 1-2-3 in the 2,000 Guineas here yesterday, sent out five of the first seven home with Starbourne a length further adrift in third.

'She`s something else, and has the most wonderful temperment,' said Cumani before adding, 'She is not as inconvenienced by soft ground as much as the others, but I have always maintained that she handles fast ground just as well. Hopefully she will get the chance to prove that in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.'

Declan McDonogh partnered his first Group 1 winner when Rebelline landed the Tattersalls Gold Cup, heading the front-running Bach inside the final furlong to score by two lengths.

The 8/11 favourite Nayef held every chance a further two-and-a-half-lengths back in third.

'She`s very good in that (soft) ground. The plan now is to give her a break, and come back in the autumn for the Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l`Arc de Triomphe,' said successful trainer Kevin Prendergast.

The Coventry Stakes at the Royal meeting is the target for Pakhoes after the Dermot Weld-trained colt opened his account in the six furlongs juvenile maiden.

'He`s a tough, laid-back colt, and is entitled to run in the Coventry,' said Weld after the son of College Chapel headed Lawood inside the final furlong to score by a-length-and-a-half under Pat Smullen.
