Gordon Elliott's Glan came home strongly to nab Banned in the final strides of the extended 1m3f maiden for four-year-olds plus in Roscommon.
Banned was really looking for the line in the final 100 yards and proved vulnerable to Glan who picked up the thread late on to catch her, despite edging across in the latter stages causing third-running Ash Tree Meadow to find himself short of room.
She scored by half a length at 9/2 from the 11/2 runner-up. Ash Tree Meadow finished the same distance away on the premises in third at 11/1.
“I couldn't go early, we were going a really hot pace, so I just left her comfortable and came home strong,” said jockey Declan McDonogh.
“She's a nice filly, she was a little bit green in the finish and just rolled in near the line.
“Hopefully she can do something on the Flat. She just got caught out with the pace early on but she stays well.”
The Raceday Stewards enquired into possible interference in the final 50 yards involving Ash Tree Meadow (FR), ridden by B.M. Coen, placed third, Banned (GB), ridden by D. McMonagle, placed second, and Glan, ridden by D.P. McDonogh, placed first, where it appeared Ash Tree Meadow ran short of room between horses in the closing stages. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. B.M. Coen stated that he was slowly away. His horse was having his first flat run and was caught for pace. He was going nowhere until Glan flashed down his outer and his mount got a little tight on the line. D. McMonagle stated that his mount has run around and had a good look but felt his mount stayed straight on the inner. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Raceday Stewards were of the opinion that while Glan had caused interference to Ash Tree Meadow (FR) he did not improve his finishing position as a result of this interference so they made no alteration to the Judge’s placings. They were, however, of the opinion that D.P. McDonogh was in breach of Rule 214 in that he had ridden carelessly and having considered his record in this regard the Raceday Stewards suspended him for one race day.
