Trainer Gordon Elliott completed an opening-races Wexford double today as his debutante Cooke’s Lass landed a gamble (15/2 — 7/2) to win the Tomcoole Farm Ltd. Mares Maiden Hurdle, under jockey Jordan Gainford.

The daughter of Authorized was initially held up in rear and while green at times, improved to challenge in the home straight and eventually edged past leader Clody Diamond on the run-in, to score by 2.5 lengths.

Elliott, who won the opener with Kish Bank was at Aintree to see Romeo Coolio finish second at Grade 1 level and at Wexford his representative Ian Amond said "Cooke’s Lass was very green and did well to win as she was being pushed along from an early stage. She was just very raw and green and I'd say she is not too bad. I'd say there is a lot of improvement in her from that and I'd say she has plenty of ability.

"She's owned by Kevin Cooke of Cooke's Pub in Caragh, near Naas. There is sure to be great celebrations there tonight."
