Fantastic Light gave Godolphin their second success in three years in the Man O`War Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday.
Emulating Godolphin`s 1998 success with Daylami, Fantastic Light spearheaded a one-two for British-trained horses by mastering Michael Jarvis`s Ela Athena.
Fantastic Light, ridden by Jerry Bailey and racing for the first time on lasix, was held up in second-last place in a race run at a modest tempo.
Pursuing a wide course in order to avoid traffic problems, Fantastic Light ran on well to capture the Grade One contest by a length.
Bailey said: 'He overcame a lot although the slow pace didn`t hurt him that much. I felt that the horse had the race at his mercy the whole time.
'Fantastic Light finished up strongly and I don`t think that the horse was wound up very tightly for this race. He will only get better.'
Fantastic Light is likely to head for the Turf Classic on October 7 according to Godolphin assistant Tom Albertrani.
Jockey Mike Smith was delighted with the effort of Ela Athena, saying: 'She ran a brilliant race. Everything turned out great except Fantastic Light running by us.'
Andy Smith, racing manager to owner Gary Tanaka, said: 'If everything turns out great we may take a look at the Turf Classic should we get invited.'
