Winter's low Sun received another unfavourable mention at wet and windy Gowran today as Dunboyne continued trainer Gordon Elliott and jockey Jack Kennedy's excellent form, in winning the Gowran Park Handicap Chase.
The son of Yeats had refused to race at Punchestown just six days ago but today began well, led at the third-last and scored readily by ten lengths from Street Value .
Earth tilts 23.5 degrees from the Sun during winter months in the northern hemisphere and Elliott today revealed “the Sun was in his eyes as the tape went back the last day and he just stood at the start. It was just one of those things.”
He added “today is probably the first time he’s really got soft ground in the last year or two. I thought it was a good performance and he’s done it well.
“We bought him to be a big staying handicap chaser and it’s a great pot. It’s great for Stephen O’Connor who has been with me from the start. The first horse I had, Mr Nosie, was for him and was sold as a point-to-pointer.
“He could come back here (for the Thyestes Chase) over three miles in January.”
Trainer Elliott and jockey Kennedy currently lead both their respective championships with €1.55m and 62 winners amassed respectively.
