Easy maiden win for odds-on 'Straws The Michael O'Callaghan trained Clutchingststraws readily justified 4/7 favouritism to win the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Fillies Maiden at Dundalk this evening, winning under Emmet McNamara. McNamara, who was on board the yard's gambled winner Aggression last week, appeared confident throughout and in the closing stages kept the winner going for a two lengths win over Pretty Love. O'Callaghan later stated “that's well deserved and it's been a long road for the lads (Men Of Straw Syndicate headed by Noel Hayes, Commercial Director of the Tote) since she was second first time out at the Curragh. “She's always been capable of winning a race like that and Dundalk is a great asset. “There was a little doubt whether she would stay the mile and with the visor on there was a risk of her being keen but she stayed the mile very well. “Emmet said he couldn't get a lead for long enough and found himself in front a bit soon. When the others got within half a length of her she picked up again and galloped to the line. “Hopefully the handicapper shouldn't put her up for that and she might come back for a handicap in the new year.” By Thomas Weekes, quotes from Gary Carson
