There was an upset in the Jamie Kyne Memorial bumper at Galway as 10/1 shot Dr Linzi and Sonny Carey hit the front at the home bend and kept up the gallop to win by four and a half lengths.
The winner will certainly boost trainer Noel Lawlor who couldn’t attend the race meeting as his wife was in hospital giving birth to a baby boy.
Dr Linzi had shown his first piece of form last time out when sixth of 15 in a Kilbeggan bumper in August.
Michelle O’Toole is part-owner of the six-year-old gelding and she said: “I own him with Kevin Cook who couldn’t be here today. We were pleasantly surprised that he won.” Pyrus Gold Wind (10/1 to 4/1 in the morning) kept on for second at 6/1, partnered by Aine O’Connor and Mon Carlos was third under Corky Carroll, also at 6/1. Mr Carson representing Willie and Patrick Mullins, went off 11/4 favourite, but he was pushed along turning in and finished a one-paced fifth.
This was Sonny Carey’s first winner for 44 mounts.
