First reserve Devils Bride made the most of his fortune at getting a run in division one of the bumper at Roscommon as he landed a comfortable success.
The six-year-old half brother to Rigour Back Bob was appearing on a racecourse for the first time when representing Willie and Patrick Mullins.
He touched as big as 11/2 on course before being backed in to 7/2 favourite on the off. Patrick Mullins sat behind front-runner Waylander but kept his mount wide after turning for home.
In the final furlong Waylander (6/1) was switched over to join Devils Bride on the outside but the game was up for him as Devils Bride galloped resolutely to the line to win by 12 lengths. Quinville Castle at 16/1 clocked in third.
“I was a bit worried about the ground. He wants nice ground. He doesn’t like being crowded,” Patrick Mullins commented.
“As you can see he looks like he’ll jump a fence, but he’s a summer horse. I imagine he’ll go jumping now.”
“I was a bit surprised. It’s his first time on grass for us anyway. He’s obviously a lot better on grass than he shows at home.”
