On his first start in handicap company Cyprusormilan (returned at 13/2, opened at 16/1 this morning) took the 2m 6f Kelly Brothers Farm Modernisation Limited Handicap Hurdle for the father and son team of Jimmy and Pat Mangan.
The 5yo son of Milan has been consistent performer in maiden hurdles and finished third on his last two starts at Cork and Gowran respectively.
Having led early he was headed from the third flight and chased the leader after that. He closed and regained the lead before the third last and went clear before the second last.
Although his lead was reduced on the run to the last, he kept on well to score by two lengths at the line from the John ‘Shark’ Hanlon trained Murchu in second under Brian Hayes at 16/1. Gonebeyondrecall finished third under Davy Russell for Noel Glynn, five and a half lengths back at 8/1 while Dingaling was a further neck back in fourth under Alan Crowe for Michael Hourgian at 13/2.
The 11/2 favourite Corbally Cross for Mark Walsh and Edward O’Grady crashed out at the second last when trying to stay on under pressure. He was unfortunately put down after breaking his leg.
There was a nasty incident as runners rounded the bottom turn into the straight for the final time when Cloughmile slipped up and brought down both Wise Oscar and Bruch Na Mara.
Winning trainer Jimmy Mangan said afterwards: "He is owned by a Welsh woman Trish Powell who is involved with Hanford’s Chemist.
"He will be kept on the go now. That was his first venture over the trip but he is versatile trip wise. He jumped well and seemed to like the good ground."
