Race 5
The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Georgie (GB), ridden by J.R. Barry, and trained by Mr M.O. Cullinane.
Evidence was heard from the rider and trainer concerned.
Mr Cullinane, Trainer, stated that this gelding was having his first run since last October and was making his first appearance in a steeplechase. He added that his yard had been under a cloud all winter and he had not trained any winners under Rules or in Point to Points during this period. As a result of this he instructed the rider to do his best and he was hopeful that his charge would finish. He concluded by stating that this gelding can be inconsistent in his performances and races in snatches. Today he did not apply any headgear as it was his first run over fences.
J.R. Barry, rider, stated that he was made aware by the trainer that the horses were generally under a cloud and was advised to give his mount a chance early on and to do his best. He felt in running that his mount jumped well in mid division before being switched to the outside but tired in the tacky ground from the third last fence. He added that he held his mount together in the latter stages as he was conscious of the health problems that had been experienced in the trainers’ yard.
The Stewards also received a report from the Turf Club Veterinary Officer who stated that Georgie was post race normal.
Having viewed the video of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards were of the opinion that Mr Cullinane had used the racecourse as a training ground and consequently fined him €1,000 and also suspended his charge Georgie for 42 days. Furthermore the Stewards were of the opinion that J.R. Barry had made insufficient effort and consequently suspended him for 7 racedays and also ordered that he forfeit his riding fee.
