Congo made to work in Dundalk opener Congo River had to work to land the odds in the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Race at Dundalk. The Aidan O'Brien-trained colt went to post a 4/7 shot in the five furlong contest having been narrowly denied on his last outing at Navan. Wayne Lordan had his mount to the fore throughout as he duelled with top-weight Dontspoilasale. Congo River travelled better early in the straight and was asked to take the lead passing the furlong pole. His rival proved determined but the Ballydoyle colt was always doing enough to score by a neck. Stable representative Chris Armstrong said:- “He was unlucky the last day in Navan and he's ran in a couple of decent maidens. “Wayne gave him a lovely ride and kept it simple. He's our only horse by Mendelssohn and it's nice to get a winner for the sire. “Five is his trip and quick ground. He'll come back here for the Listed Legacy Stakes at the end of the month. We'll try and get black-type. “Wayne knew the second horse and said he was very battle hardened. In fairness he battled away and it's great to get the win for him. Hopefully it's onwards and upwards.”
