Tax For Max justified 1/5 favouritism to win Wexford's Forth Mountain Trails Beginners Chase on his fences debut today, continuing winning jockey Kieran Callaghan's good recent record.
Once rated 110 on the flat, Tax For Max managed just two wins from 16 hurdle runs and today survived a second-last-fence blunder to beat Walnut Beach by four and a half lengths.
Winning trainer Willie Mullins had earlier featured in the royal carriage procession at Royal Ascot and at Wexford Callaghan, with a fourth winner in eight days, said “I took a lead over the first couple of fences and after that I was happy to let him roll away. He’s the best horse in the race and there was no point in complicating it.
“He made a mistake at the second last but other than that he was very nimble. He’s not the biggest in the world so I thought it was a good round of jumping from a horse having his first run over fences.
“He’s been jumping well at home and has done plenty of schooling.
“Willie has always been very good to me and has given me plenty of chances in the last few weeks.”
