Bushmans Pass sprang a 20/1 surprise in the p2p.ie Point-to-Point INH Flat Race, providing owner/trainer Mick Flannery with his first success since June of 2017.
A faller on debut at Loughrea in March, the son of Virtual finished fifth and fourth on his next two starts.
Settled towards rear by Johnny Barry, the six-year-old took closer order with five furlongs to race and was pushed along in fifth as they entered the straight.
Soon ridden into second, he gradually reeled-in On The Tide (16s early, returned 3/1) inside the final furlong, with a length-and-a-quarter separating the pair at the line. Joe's Turn (10/3) was another seven-and-a-half lengths back in third, while Corbetts Cross who was sent off the 15/8 favourite, could only manage a disappointing fifth.
"This is powerful! It was a shot in the dark going into it but I thought he'd stay, as he stays forever," Flannery revealed.
"He was getting better in his point-to-points and will continue to improve and is a fine big horse.
"I'll sell him now - I have enough horses at home and have 10 of my own. We can't get owners in Mayo - I have one owner, and any of the few I have I train for myself."
The winner is a half-brother to Advantage Point who has won twice for Eddie Harty.
STEWARDS REPORTS
The Stewards interviewed Mr J.C. Barry, rider of Bushmans Pass, concerning his use of the whip in the closing stages of this race. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned who accepted that he was in breach of the regulation and apologised. Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence the Stewards were satisfied that Mr. J. C. Barry was in breach of Regulation 10.3.g, excessive frequency, and 10.3,f, excessive force. Having considered Mr. J. C. Barry's record in this regard the Stewards suspended Mr. J. C. Barry for two racedays.
