David Wachman completed a first and last race double at Leopardstown this evening as General Brook got up close home to take the finale, the Leopardstown Summer Music & Racing Handicap, under Billy Lee.
The four-year-old son of Westerner won at Cork on his penultimate outing before disappointing on his last start on soft to heavy ground at the Curragh.
Back on good ground this evening he was sent off at 8/1 having touched 12's on-course.
Settled in second behind clear leader Long Journey Home he came under pressure two furlongs out and he reduced the deficit from over a furlong from the finish.
He kept on best inside the final furlong, getting to the front with 50 yards to race before going on to score by half a length.
Long Journey Home finished a gallant second under Connor King for Daniel O’Sullivan at 25/1, while Artful Artist (11/8fav) could only manage a disappointing third a further neck back under Chris Hayes for Tony Martin.
David Wachman said afterwards: “Wayne gave him a good ride. He is a tough genuine horse and I think there might be a race at Galway for him.”
